Kayan Mentarang of Borneo

Kayan Mentarang is a national park in one of the most Isolated regions in the outer corner of North Kalimantan province of Indonesia Borneo Island. The Park covers an area stretched along the border line with Malaysian Sabah and Sarawak in the hearth of Borneo and contains divers flora and fauna, from cloud rain forest, montane forest and even Kerangas forest with a few dozens of Dayak tribal villages and settlements. The isolated Krayan highland mountain plateau is home to traditional Dayak Tribes, with culture treasures that have survived within the jungle eco logical wealth. The Krayan area is only accessible by multi days hike through dense tropical rain forest, from either the bordering upper stream of the Bahau river in the south or by jungle trekking from the Berang river from the east coastal line of Kalimantan.
The flora in it’s vicinity of Kayan Mentarang Nature Reserve as the largest protected tropical rain forest in Indonesia covers about 1.300.000 hectares with the culture heritage as the main tourism attraction of the National Park. Tour Duration 14 Days / 13 Nights

Day 01 - 03: TARAKAN, LONG BAWAN, LONG LAYU ( BLD)
Meeting service by your tour guide, transfer to airport for the flight to Long Bawan. Upon Arrival at Long Bawan, direct prepare for trekking the kerangas forest and jungle valleys to the south for two Full days, you will pass green belt tropical rain forest slopes. The wildlife as gibbons, Macaque, leaf monkeys and plenty of other primates hide in the lush rainforest. Once arrived in Long Layu village, check in at the Home stay or Local House, afternoon sightseeing in the village to experience the culture or trek the jungle to the Salt Making mountain as a traditional community activity where the salt is found in the salt springs and being exchanged to Malaysia for prestige items. Meals provided and overnight at Local House or Home stay.

Day 04: LONG LAYU, TANJUNG PASIR ( LONG RUNGAN) (BLD)
Trek Through the Forest of North Borneo passing irrigated dry rice fields, the rock complex called Honey Rock, which arises about 40 meters high above the tree tops forest roof. The culture history heritage speaks through the caves and stone burial sites during our hike over the trails under the towering trees of the jungle valleys which we pass on the route. Meals enroute and overnight at Local House or Home stay.

Day 05: TANJUNG PASIR (LONG RUNGAN), TANG TAAN (BLD)
by Kayak cruise downstream the adventures river rapids of Tanjung Pasir to the settlement called "Tang Taan" along the Krayan River, to trek the jungle path to an impressive human figure carved rock. Meals enroute and overnight at Local House or Home stay.

Day 06 & 11 : TANG TAAN, FOREST TREK, LONG PUJUNGAN (BLD)
We start the off the beaten track adventure for about six full days dense jungle rain forest trekking expedition from the Krayan Highlands towards the Bahau River which connect us via the Dayak settlement of Apau Ping and the Bahau river Long Alongo to Long Pujungan village. During the multi days forest, we make our path and trails in this un-foot printed jungle, fish and hunt for extra protein, drink water from the tree roots to survive during our trek in the dense tropical forest.

Day 12: DOWNSTREAM, LONG PUNJUNGAN, LONG BIA (BLD)
After breakfast start our last part of the adventure trip downstream the Kayan River to Long Bia by motor canoe or long boat passing fast stream rapids while you can enjoy the rain forest scenery of the river banks, overnight at local guesthouse, meals provided en route.

Day 13: LONG BIA, TANJUNG SELOR (BLD)
Breakfast, continue our trip downstream to Tanjung Selor, upon arrival check in at hotel in Tanjung Selor, for a hot shower in your ariconditioned room, evening free at leisure, meals provided at local restaurants.

Day 14: TANJUNG SELOR, TARAKAN (B)
Breakfast, cross the sea by speedboat to Tarakan, and transfer to the airport where you can catch your onward flight to your next holiday destination.

Kayan Mentarang Facts

Kayan Mentarang well known as the Heart of Borneo is an unfoot-printed jungle of the highest quality found at Kalimantan, a tour through the highland area about 1500-2200 meters above sea level with beautyful rainforest valleys and slopes, and dozens of rivers have to be crossed. The Jungle area is totally unhabited and un-explored, till we reach the highlands of Krayan where about a 2000 families live in small settlements totally isolated along the Malaysian Border. During the trek simple camps will be made, while we hunt for fish and meat for extra protein along the way.
